Working at the New Media Innovation Lab has been a great part of my education at ASU. The media, especially new media, is a field where a working environment is ideal for learning the business. The New Media Innovation Lab is real-life work experience mixed in with a strong learning environment, a great place to start your career.

The New Media Innovation Lab was a great jump start for me and my post-collegiate life. Not only did I learn how to research, conceptualize and implement new and exciting media elements, I also learned how to deal with and take instruction from clients in a real life setting. We were taught to be open-minded and to think freely. Retha Hill inspired me to think outside the box and push myself creatively. It was more than just another class, it was an experience. An experience that prepared me for my future.

I work at a media company which was just deciding to make the jump from print magazines to the Internet when I applied. They knew that they were behind the times, and knew they would need something fresh that would bring people to their site, and someone with the right training who could do that for them.

My training with innovation was a key aspect in getting hired. The New Media Innovation Lab didn't train me to create what others already have; it trained me to look at what is out there, and to use those technologies to innovate, to make something new. Everyday in the lab, we used our journalism training we received at the Cronkite school, mixed it with the technology experience that only our generation, the "Digital Natives," has, and produced something that made traditional journalist say "Wow."

Working with the NMIL has been a wonderful experience. There is a lot of opportunity to create, innovate and experiment with new media to reach out to the next generation. As an engineer, you can expand your programming skills, understand the user view point and create live, interesting and useful products. And with the black macbooks that you get, the sky is the limit.

The NMIL was one of my best Cronkite experiences. It was amazing to be in a place where I was expected to think outside the box and explore new media. I am much more aware of the online world and the possibilities of new media now. The advantage of working with clients gave me the opportunity to develop and execute some of the ideas we worked on for the semester. Finally, the lab fostered close relationship with the technical and editorial team from our clients, which was extremely enriching. The lab prepared me for the content producing job I now have at one of the largest new web sites in the country.
